EMPTY OS presents an interactive desktop UI that mimics a 1984-era
monochrome personal computer. The player receives contract briefs from their
boss (Rex Ripleys) via an in-game mail client, then opens the built-in code
editor to solve algorithmic challenges in one of five supported languages.
Passing all automated test cases ships the contract, earns in-game credits,
and instantiates a live, playable desktop application as the reward.
Technical Specifications:
-
Execution Engine: JavaScript code runs in a browser-sandboxed new Function() context with a captured console proxy to intercept stdout. Simulated runtimes for Python, C, C++, and Java transpile the submitted code into equivalent JavaScript logic server-side-free — the entire test harness runs in the browser with no external evaluation API.
-
Mail Client: The MailClient component presents an in-game inbox styled as a retro email terminal. Rex Ripley delivers a dramatic story pitch for each contract, including payout, client name, and OS release target. Players can select past or current contracts directly from the inbox.
-
Window Manager: Every application runs inside a WindowFrame — a draggable, z-ordered floating panel styled as a 1-bit OS window. Implemented entirely in React without any third-party window/drag library.
-
Code Runner IDE Platform: The IdeRunner component is the heart of the game — a full in-browser code editor switch between JavaScript, Python, C, C++, and Java per level with integrated test runner.
